Ida Poitier Turnquest - President B.U.T.
16 MARCH, 2006
The Bahamas Union of Teachers has been recognized as the sole bargaining agent for ALL its members in the Public School system in the Bahamas for the past fifty nine (59) years. We are greatly concerned that the Government is trying to deny our members the right of representation.
Their violations of our Recognition Agreement is clear, the Industrial Relations Act is clear, the ILO conventions 87 and 98 is clear and I shall be very clear.
This is “union busting” and the Bahamas Union of Teachers shall represent ALL its members without distinction.
Let me remind you that the Bahamas Union of Teacher was very sensitive and considerate when we postponed negotiations in November 2005 because of the devastation caused by Hurricane Wilma.
Over the past several weeks we have negotiated in “Good Faith” but the Government has not reciprocated. They are attempting to destroy our union.
We invite the Government to come back to the table and negotiate in good faith and desist from using this as a stalling tactic.
We reiterate that the Bahamas Union of Teachers shall continue to represent and negotiate for ALL 3,500 of its members from Grand Bahama to Inagua
ALL MEMBERS OF THE BAHAMAS UNION OF TEACHERS ARE ON “AMBER ALERT” until further instruction from your shop stewards.
